Documentary

My documentaries allowed me to highlight issues that I care about.

I was part of a two-person production team. We immersed ourselves in the lives of our subjects, spending months on research alone. I worked on all aspects of the production, from story development to project management, camera operating, sound recording and video editing.

Dir. Camilla French, Sound and Stills Judy Bretschneider, 2009

Mahmut is a Uyghur musician from China's Xinjiang province. He has played the tambur for over twenty years but is now struggling to find an audience. The Uyghurs are one of China's Muslim ethnic minorities and are losing many traditions under Chinese rule. Mahmut believes all the history and stories of the Uyghurs are contained in the music of the Muqam. Can his music survive in this ever changing and hostile environment?
